Soccer Drills for Young Players

  • Pirate Treasure – This game is also a drill that teaches children skills at both dribbling the ball and accuracy at shooting. Half the team is the pirates guarding the treasure and the other half of the team are trying to get to the treasure. This treasure is cones that are placed at one end of the pitch. One player battles two defenders and attempts to dribble past them. When the knock down the cones, they get a point for their “treasure”.
  • Defending the Dribble – Using cones, set up a perimeter in the middle of the pitch by placing four cones equidistant from each other. The team should be divided into two groups with each wearing different colors. One color plays offense and the other plays defense. One player from defense is in the middle of the perimeter to attempt to steal the ball from the offensive player who

Building Your Own Soccer Goal

Materials needed (most if not all of these can be purchased at your local hardware store): First, you need a post hole digger to dig holes deep enough to place your goal-posts in. Next, you will need two 4×4 vertical bars and one 2×4 cross bar. Other miscellaneous materials that would be helpful include: a staple gun, tape measure, nails, cement mixture, a net, and a string to tie the net onto the bars. For your bars, you can use PVC, aluminum, or steel tubing (I think PVC is the best because it is the easiest to work with).

According to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, the dimensions of a full-sized match play goal must be 24×8 feet, so take this into consideration when purchasing your materials and constructing your goal.

WARNING: I suggest that you do not use home-made goals if your child plays on … Read the rest

About Overenthusiastic Sports Parents

Approach other team parents

If you’re offended by somebody’s behavior, it’s likely that you’re not the only one. Call a team meeting about a particular parent’s behavior and discuss the situation with as many team parents as possible. Find out who else does not approve of the offender’s behavior. If a lot of team parents agree the behavior is unhealthy for the kids and how the team is being represented, approach the team coach and ask them to address the parent who is causing the distress.

If there is a team parent who happens to be friendly with the offender, perhaps they could have a less-confrontational discussion with the offender letting them in on how the other parents are feeling. If no one is willing to address the offender, then call a mandatory team meeting where guidelines will be established on parental behavior, and discuss what the consequences will be … Read the rest

Choose Backpacking Stove Wisely

Canister stoves run on pressurized gases; isobutane and propane. Isobutane burns hot and clean and in colder conditions it can outperform conventional butane. The canister self-seals when the stove is detached eliminating the possibility of fuel leaks. The fuel canisters connect to the stove in two ways:

  • Upright: Stove screws onto the top of the fuel canister. This is the smallest and lightest option but with a tall profile this configuration is prone to tip-overs
  • Low profile: The burner sits on its own base and a fuel hose connects it to the canister. Canisters can be inverted to improve cold-weather performance and it provides a steadier platform with less tip-overs. It is a bit heavier and bulkier.

The biggest drawback to upright canisters is that they de-pressurize in the cold (32 degrees or lower) leading to weak or no flame. Normal pressure resumes when the canisters temperature is increased.

Finding Sports Bookie

Regardless of which is it, through the next paragraphs we will be defining the aspects of a good sports agent, which should allow you to select a sports bookie that feels right to you.

First off, you need to determine whether you want to deal with a “traditional sports bookie” or a sportsbook. By “traditional sports bookie” I am referring to individuals who tend to a few exclusive clients, and as of now, I’ll refer to them as sport bookies or bookies (even if sportsbooks can be classified as sport bookies as well).

Before moving on, let me offer a word of caution; if bookies are not allowed to practice their profession in your country (or state/city), do not bet through them. Although you will probably be able to find a sports bookie that works “in the shadows” within your city, if he gets caught you could lose money.

Prevent Basketball Injuries

The best way that a basketball player, or athlete in general, can prevent another sports injury is through personal care and preparation. Stretching before any activity, practice, or game is a MUST every time. I recommend that players warm up with a quick jog or light run up and down the court before they start. After completing this run, is it crucial that you stretch your muscle after they are slightly loose so that you can prevent a strain or tear. It is not good for muscles to stretch them when they are cold. During my days of high school basketball, my coach would always have our team do 5 laps around the court to warm up. After that run we would meet up in the middle of the court for team stretches.

Another way to prevent and injury is to wear proper braces on the body part you have … Read the rest

Marathon Nutrition and Hydration

If you have been taking a balanced diet before, you don’t have to change your diet greatly. Of major importance you need to increase the number of proteins that you take in your diet.

Many marathoners tend to make the mistake of getting vitamin supplements during their training. This is wrong. The best way of going about it is getting the vitamins from whole foods.

Pre-run eating

Before you participate in a half marathon you should ensure that you are properly fueled. To be on the safe side you should eat a light meal (containing all the necessary ingredients) of about 250-300 calories.

Experts recommend that you should eat 1 ½ to 2 hours before you start running. This is to avoid cramping. Eating also ensures that you have enough energy to run.

When choosing your diet, you should choose something that is high in carbohydrates but low in fat, … Read the rest

Choose Longboard Trucks

Cast trucks are the cheapest option and there are a lot of companies and models to choose from. Precision trucks are fewer are they are more recommended for technical riding, like downhill or technical sliding. they also cost about seven times the price of cast trucks, so if you don’t feel your wallet is thick enough, trust me when I say that they don’t make that big a difference, especially to the novice long boarder.

Choose the width of your truck according to the width of your board. Usually the boards are measured in inches and the trucks in millimeters, but you’ll get the hang of it. What not to do is choose narrow trucks for wide boards and vice versa. A narrow truck on a wide board will eat away all stability and you will find yourself sprawled on the asphalt more times than you wish for it to … Read the rest

Soccer Attacking

  • look to go forward past opposing players by shooting, dribbling, running, passing
  • always try to score (if you can’t score look to make a pass – if a pass isn’t possible look to advance the ball by dribbling or running)

  • support teammates by providing communication, creating passing options and opportunities for playing the ball forward, and creating numerical superiority (get open with good angle and distance of support, get goal-side etc.)
  • help the ball carrier by moving to a position where you can either receive a pass or draw opponents away from an area the ball carrier is running into
  • provide all around support and options for the ball carrier for both forward
  • spread out in all directions and stretch out opposition (unbalance defense) and safe backward passes
  • look to combine (wall pass, overlap runs, take overs etc.)
  • use supporting players to change point of attack

Customizing Football Boots

Black is the most common requirement when it comes to the color of football shoes. As a matter of fact, most of the well-known manufacturers offer at least one of their shoes in black, but this might not be the right shoe for you. Your success at the game depends on which shoe you are wearing and whether it offers you comfort and enhances your shooting and passing abilities. The only option left for you is to get your favorite shoe blacked out by a professional company that offers this service.

The best blackout effect can be achieved with the help of special dye that is extremely long lasting. The dye should last very long considering that the pair of shoes will undergo a great deal of punishment depending on how often you play football wearing them. No doubt, some part of the dye will wear away as a result … Read the rest
