Subjectivity of Soccer Timekeeping

Don’t get me wrong, soccer need not change one iota and it will still remain the most popular sport in the world. I’m just saying that when people ask why it isn’t more popular here, there are some minor cultural differences that need to be overcome.

I have often wondered about the timekeeping of a soccer match. In North America, sports that have a time element, such as football, hockey, and basketball display for all to see a large and precise clock that in many cases is broken down to tenths of a second. This scoreboard clock may not be the official time, as that is usually kept by an official timekeeper who is a member of the officiating crew, but it always reflects the official time remaining even if it has to be adjusted. There can be very little doubt about how much time is left and, with very … Read the rest

Geometry Is Used in Soccer

The Soccer Field

One basic concept in geometry is symmetry or balance. If you examine various soccer fields, you will find that they are all marked evenly. What you find on one side is always replicated on the other. This is a literal representation of what is known as a level playing field.

Fundamentally, the shape of a soccer field is rectangular. There are specific lengths that are expressed either in yards or meters in measuring the rectangle. Certainly, you will see that there are plenty of other shapes to find in this field— the penalty area and penalty arc, the center circle, the goal area, and the corner arc among others.

There are governing laws to follow when making the markings in a soccer field. Therefore, the groundsman should ensure that these are complied with to meet given requirements. I myself have experienced officiating in actual games. In my … Read the rest

Soccer Cleats For Kids

When looking for the cleats keep these things in mind. Make sure that the cleats you are choosing are a good fit, not even a little bit loose or tight. If it is loose it can impact the performance and if it is tight then it can give cramps to the kid’s feet. Also, make sure that they are durable as well. Kids apart from playing also do a lot of running. The upper portion should be tight to give a proper fit, but not too tight to squeeze your toes. The cleats should be strong to endure all that. Also, small kids look after legend players as their role model and try to adapt their style, also demanding the same kind of cleats worn by these players. Kids just go crazy for them.

Soccer Lingo

Every soccer field has a circle in the middle of it. This is called the Center Circle and each team starts on their own half of the field.

There is an 18 yard rectangle in front of each team’s goal that’s called the Penalty Area. If an attacking player is fouled in this box, they’ll receive a Penalty Kick from within the box.

If a team knocks the ball over the sideline, the other team is allowed to throw the ball in, from the place the where the ball exited.

However if a team knocks the ball out at end of the field (adjacent to the goals), the opposition team is able to kick the ball back. The attacking team takes a corner, kicking it towards the goals; and the defending team takes a goal kick, typically kicking it as far up-field as they can.
