Youth Sports on a Budget

ENSURE YOUR PLAYER’S COMMITMENT

Is the money you will be paying out well worth it? Have a frank discussion with your child beforehand to gauge their level of interest. It can be very frustrating for a parent to commit financial resources out front, only to find their child’s interest waning or low level of commitment.

GET YOUR PLAYER TO CONTRIBUTE

Depending on your player’s age, you may want to have them contribute to their sport’s expenses. Or maybe agree upon extra chores or things the athlete can do as a way to show how much they appreciate and want to help out in pursuit of something they love and benefit from.

TRY A REC OR COMMUNITY LEAGUE FIRST

Is this your child’s first time trying a sport? Instead of going all out with a club or travel team where the fees and costs are generally higher, why not see how … Read the rest

Rainy Day Tent

Adequate Ventilation

With 4, or more, people stuck inside a tent on a rainy day, the humidity inside the tent is going to shoot up rather quickly. You’ll be trying to play cards only to have one suddenly disappear… to be found an hour later stuck to the side of little Trent’s clammy leg. You won’t be able to stop the rainstorm, or your breathing for that matter either, but you can choose a tent that has at least 2 screened windows on opposite walls. Or equally effective, a vented dome top with a ground vent that’s shielded by the rainfly or a vestibule. Any combination that allows for the movement of air will be a great benefit.

Vestibule & Screened Porch

Many tents are now available with a vestibule… a semi-sheltered area over the door opening that is formed by an extension of the rainfly. These work quite well … Read the rest

Augmented Geocaching

Ever since the first cache was placed, people all over the world started putting strips of paper inside plastic containers and hiding them in interesting places. All you need is the coordinates, which are easily obtained from a GPS handset or Google maps. Once the cache has been logged on geocaching.com, subject to approval, it will get a unique GC code then the Geocache is live for the world to seek.

My first Geocaching experience was my first date with my girlfriend. We met on Dartford Heath. In the weeks before we had chatted many times about our interest in the outdoors and the various hobbies we had. I had to admit I had heard of the hobby but hadn’t actually tried it. Two years on, nearly 500 caches found, we go caching whenever we get the chance. We recommend that if you are going to meet someone you have … Read the rest

Tennis Elbow Exercises

One way of dealing with this problem is avoiding the activity that causes it. However, this is not always possible since people’s livelihoods are connected with it. A doctor might suggest treatment by a physiotherapist or even the use of a special brace to hold the arm in place. In extreme cases a doctor might even prescribe injections of cortisone to help control the inflammation. The problem is that these methods cost a lot of money. If they don’t work you might even have to go in for surgery.

You’ll be able to get your arm in good condition without having to spend a lot of money if you do the right tennis elbow exercises instead. These exercises are surprisingly easy to do and you will be able to get your elbow in good condition within a reasonably short time.

Keep In Mind for Paintball Beginners

  • Let go of your fear – Getting hit by this is much more feared than it actually is. Initially, when the paint hits, you may sting a bit and you can also get a slight mark on your body. But don’t worry after an hour or two this mark will disappear and you will be dying to get back to the game. This is the reason why it is advisable that you should not spend the entire sport hidden behind the tree as some people do. Remember that it is just paint and not a bullet. In case you are still afraid you can wear gloves and some extra layers under your overalls and you won’t feel anything.
  • Don’t shoot without being sure – The guns, in this case, are pretty loud and so you should not use it until you are very sure. Otherwise, you may end up giving

Right Tactical Gear

Head Protection

A knit cap (or watch cap) is perfect for hunting, hiking or any other outdoor activity. Knit caps are designed to provide a certain amount of warmth in cold weather and are a common form of headgear for seamen, fishermen, hunters and others who spend the majority of their day outdoors.

Hearing Protection

Ear plugs are a comfortable and easy to use option. The best ones on the market today come with a removable “pop cord” and are available in 3 size options. Ear plugs of this nature are guaranteed to last at least 6-12 months of regular use.

Eye Protection

The 9.5 base curve of most anti-fog safety glasses offers great wrap-around protection and the hard coated poly-carbonate lenses offer 99% UV protection.

Outerwear

Step up to a base layer that’s better than all other performance wear because it’s more than just polyester. The Ztek shirts are … Read the rest

Training Injury

With my half marathon coming up in just a few weeks, everything has changed. When I went into the Dirty Girl 5k, I was psyched. I was starting to get addicted to the running bug, thinking about how many more races I could try. I was still slow, but up to walking to 2 minutes, jogging 4 (from not running at all).

Two days later, when I returned to the gym, the minute I started jogging I knew something was wrong. I felt lopsided and felt a sharp pain in my hamstring. It took two more days and a lot of searching my memory to figure out how I did it – hiking my leg over a sawhorse obstacle in the mud run. I was too darn stubborn to go around and didn’t even consider injury. BAD move.

It was sore enough that I didn’t work out AT all for … Read the rest

Getting Championship Rings

Having one made for you

If you have a large budget, you can approach a company that makes championship rings and ask it to make one for you. The ring can resemble that of your team in design, but it’s always wise to customize it by adding your own details. For example, you can add your name, date of birth or any other feature that you like. You should note that most of the legit rings are made from gold or diamond and as you know, these metals don’t come cheap; therefore, you should be prepared to part with a good amount of money.

If you don’t have a lot of money, but want to have the ring with you, there are plenty of replicas in the market that you can go for. These rings resemble the real rings, but they are made from cheaper materials such as plastic. You … Read the rest

Sail For the First Time

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to use both at a later time. Assuming that the main is up, next you will need to turn the tiller towards your intended direction of travel until the sail finds the wind. By the way, a tiller is the steering control mechanism on smaller sailing boats. However take note, the tiller steers in the opposite direction you will want to go. For instance, if you push the tiller towards the starboard [right side], the boat will steer to the left or the port side. If you turn the tiller towards the port or [left] side of the boat, it will steer to the right or the starboard side. So unlike a car, the tiller works just the opposite! On the other hand, a ship wheel works exactly the same as the steering wheel on an automobile. So depending on how your sailboat is equipped … Read the rest
